Rent the RadioDetection cable avoidance tool (C.A.T.) underground detection, utility line locator, and avoidance tool (line tracer). The rental includes the Genny which is used to send a signal into the line or conduit you are locating and a 200-foot metal fish tape to convey the signal from within the pipe or conduit. There may be errant signals if there are underground electric lines in the area. To avoid having the genny signal 'jump' to the electric lines, set the genny signal to a low setting. Otherwise all the electrical signals on the local breaker panel will carry the signal - if it 'jumps' over. It is also very important to have a good ground on the genny unit. A good ground will lessen the chance of signal jumping.

This advanced detector/locator can be used in one of three modes, or all three at once:

1) Power signal for buried electric lines.

2) Radio signal for buried cables which have a portion exposed above ground.

3) Genny mode in which a signal introduced into the buried line is detected. If you insert a flexible tracer into the pipe, even PVC pipe can be detected and precisely located. Pipe Finder mode.

Instructions: 90% of customers use it to detect non-conductive pipe burried in the ground. In order to do so, use the included fishtape. The use of the C.A.T. 4 and the Genny to do this requires feeding the fish tape through the pipe. The Genny box comes apart by un-clipping the ends of it, and pulling the top half off. The wires inside the box can be removed and plugged into the side of the unit. the connector only goes into the Genny unit one way. The red lead wire gets attached to the fish tape, and the black wire gets attached to the rebar ground post in the kit. If you know the direction your pipe is running, you want your ground to be at a perpendicular and at a 90 degree angle to the pipe. When you turn the Genny unit on, not letting go of and continuously holding the power button will quiet the unit. There will be a noticable noice level change, but there will still be a ringing. After getting the Genny unit set up, the C.A.T. 4 unit can be used for locating the fish tape. The C.A.T. 4 must be set to the G (Genny) mode, in order to pick up the Genny signals. The yellow knob is used to change the settings on the unit, and the settings are displayed on the side of the unit and on the LCD display. The C.A.T. 4 unit is then held perpendicular to the direction of the pipe, and is swept back and forth over the area where the pipe is suspected to be. The blue knob can be used to adjust the sensitivity. Spinning the knob to the left turns the sensitivity down, and to the right turns it up. Using the graph displayed on the unit, you can locate the exact location of the fish tape. Pressing the small oval shaped black button on the top of the C.A.T. 4 unit will give you the depth reading.

When using the unit to locate a burried power line, the settings on the C.A.T. 4 unit must be adjusted to the P (power) setting. First make sure that the wire you are looking for is running power to the source, and the power is being used in some form. Then by simply passing the C.A.T. 4 unit perpendicular to the suspected area of the wire, you can locate the wire. Again the sensitivity may have to be adjusted.

If using the unit to locate a burried power line, when there is no power source, you will need to use the Genny system again. Set the mode back to G (Genny) on the C.A.T. 4. By simply setting the Genny box on the ground near where the line enters the ground, and turning the unit on without the cord hooked up, it will send out a signal that will then be sent through the lines you are trying to locate. Again, simply pass the C.A.T. 4 unit over the suspected area of the wire, you can locate it using the meter on the LCD, and then using the black oval shaped button located on the top of the unit, you can get your depth.
